Birmingham has been classified as a city since the late 1800s and is the second largest UK city, by population, after London. It should therefore be no surprise that a city of this size can offer some of the best cultural attractions for visitors.
According to Visit Birmingham, the city offers world-class facilities from culture to fashion. There is also plenty to keep the children entertained.
Places to visit
If performing arts is your thing, Birmingham will not disappoint. You can choose from ballet, opera and musicals at the Birmingham Hippodrome or theatre productions at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, where you can also try out your artistic skills in one of the workshops. The Electric Cinema, one of the oldest in the UK, offers a very different cinematic experience.
Birmingham has been synonymous with jewellery making for decades and no visit to the city would be complete without a browse around the shops in this area. You can also visit the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter to find out more about the history of this industry.
There are many interesting venues dedicated to arts in Birmingham. The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, most well-known for its selection of pre-Raphaelite art, has numerous other galleries and is housed in a majestic grade II listed building. The Custard Factory, so named because it is located on the grounds of the old Bird’s custard factory, is a huge 15-acre site that houses shops, art galleries and digital businesses under one roof. The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) Gallery has three floors displaying art, jewellery and crafts. Some of the space is hired out to budding artists and craftspeople; therefore, the displays can change on a regular basis.
Finally, of course, there is shopping. Don’t forget to fit in time for a visit to the famous Bullring.
Places to stay
Birmingham boasts over 30,000 beds for visitors – if you are planning an overnight stay, you won’t be short of choice. Instead of a hotel room, why not consider serviced Birmingham apartments such as No.8 Waterloo Street apartments?
If you are looking for somewhere in the UK to visit that can offer you culture, fashion, theatre and plenty of great places to eat and stay, Birmingham could be just the place for you.
