How to avoid feeling lonely in retirement

Retirement is that wonderful time when you no longer have to worry about the 9 to 5 grind, the deadlines, boring meetings, stress and clock-watching. You get your life back. However, for many people, the loss of socialisation and contact hits them harder than they imagined. Even if you weren’t that close with colleagues, just being around people is something that is greatly missed. Even if you have a spouse or partner, you can’t rely on one person to provide all your social needs. Humans are highly social beings, so it’s important to be ready for feelings of loneliness and know how to combat them.

Why not sign up for some classes? Have you always had a desire to paint, learn how to dance, cook better or speak a foreign language? Local community centres offer a wide variety of courses during the days and evenings and you’re bound to meet others who share your interests.

If there isn’t one to join, why not start one? Whether you’re into books, eating out, bowls or wine-tasting – getting people together to chat and enjoy experiences together is what matters. If you find you’re lacking a sense of purpose, volunteering can be the answer. Helping others, meeting new people and learning new skills can fill your retirement with happiness and satisfaction. There are so many opportunities available that everyone should be able to find something. Whether you’re a history buff and volunteer at a museum or you want to serve food to the homeless, you can put your previous work skills to excellent use or try something totally new.

Take up an activity

If you love walking or hiking, then get out and about and join a local rambling group. Perhaps you could start a group for visiting local places of interest or taking coach trips. Visit a local gym and see what classes are available for seniors. Staying active is important for both your mental and physical wellbeing.

If you are musical, consider joining a local band or choir. Most communities have musical groups that welcome members of all abilities and ages. If it’s been a while since you played, you’ll be surprised at quickly those skills return with a little practice and encouragement. You will be exploring your creative side and meeting new people.


Make a pledge to ring, visit or write to a friend every day. In today’s digital world, it’s easier than ever to stay in touch with people wherever they are in the world. Social media is useful for instant contact with those who might not be close by, but for more meaningful contact, call or visit local friends as much as possible.
