Why do we use concrete in construction?

Concrete is a material that is popular in construction across the world. It can be used for creating flooring, foundations and for making bricks. Construction Companies like Piggot and Whitfield will use concrete along with other construction materials such as brick, stone, steel and wood in their work.

Concrete is what is classed as a composite material, meaning it is made up of a number of different elements. These are both fine and coarse aggregate. Aggregate is items such as gravel and stone that has been crushed as well as any recycled cement and other items. This is then mixed together with a liquid that helps the aggregate bind together.

Over a period of time, the mixed concrete then starts to harden into the material that we see on the roads and in our buildings. The time it takes for it to fully harden will depend on the type of concrete and the size of the area that it is being used on, as well as other external factors such as the temperature and the weather.

The strength of concrete will also depend on its type and use but it is a very sturdy material and it can be poured into moulds to make items of almost any shape and size. It is for this reason that it is used as a building foundation material. It can be easily mixed and poured into the area and once dried it can withstand the weight of the house on it.
