The optical illusion
The golden rule: the horizontal stripes give the effect of widening, and the vertical stripes thin and lengthen.
- Use this trick to your advantage.A plain sweater with a straight skirt with horizontal stripes will be an excellent asset if you do not have hips.
- Do you measure five feet?A dress with vertical stripes on the sides will give you the illusion of the few inches you wish to have.
The illusion is also true for oblique stripes.
- Oblique lines to the waist, which gather at the same point, will give the impression of a thinner or at least cutout size.On the other hand, they will visually increase the size of the chest.
- Patterns like zigzags are harder to wear, as they can give the impression of enlarging your silhouette.Choose this print sparingly.
And the curve stripe? It can be flattering but try the garment. Make sure the design falls on the right curves, accentuate what you want and camouflage a bit the other.

The width and color of the lines
The golden rule: Wide lines are considered more relaxed. For the chic, one opts therefore for the thin and light stripes.
Do not hesitate to choose colors that are out of the ordinary to avoid the marine (blue and white) or classic (black and white) look.
However, do not overdo it. A skirt with multicolored stripes will look rather like a circus tent or the fabric of a hot air balloon.
Mistakes to avoid
- Be scratched from head to toe.You can push the sweater and striped shoes, but do not combine two striped styles.
- Scratches determine the colors you are entitled to for the rest of your apparel unless you arrange them with classic jeans.
- Combine too many patterns. The squared and the stripes are worn on two different days.
- If you are around, avoid wide stripes at all costs. They will add to your curves, even if they are vertical.
- The duo black and yellow stripes … you will look like a bee.
Tips & Tricks
- Use diagonal stripes on the shoulders if they are strong.Same thing on your hips.
- Bias strips in the back of a long tunic will give the illusion of having “more buttocks”.
- A pattern of “hourglass” lines will sublimate any silhouette (unless you are thin) on a dress, tunic or jacket.
