Do you love a bit of retail therapy? When it comes to shopping, are the master or the unwilling participant? With Christmas fast approaching and the thought of busy festive shopping just around the corner, now is the perfect time to look at some fun facts about the retail experience. What better way than to look at some extreme shopping that’s made the Guinness Book of Records:
Quickest Scanning – This world record was achieved by Rosilda Farreira of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She holds the record for the fastest time to scan 50 items through the till in an incredible 1 minute 53 seconds. The rules of the attempt were every item had to be different and the very last item to be scanned was an edition of the Guinness Book of Records!
Biggest Store – The largest department store in the world is in Busan, South Korea. The Shinsegae Centrum City Department Store is a whopping 3,163,567 square feet. This could be your idea of heaven or hell but it’s stocked with designer clothes, has its own spa, golf driving range and roof terrace.
Pricey Perfume – The most expensive perfume in the world is the Clive No.1 for both men and women. A whiff of this will set you back $2,355 for a small 30ml bottle. Twelve years ago, a limited edition 10-pack went on sale for an amazing $205,000 per 500ml. Now that’s got to be a wonderful smell! Smell has one of the biggest subconscious effects on our emotions and even our buying habits. Quickest Motorized Trolley – Want to get your shopping in a hurry? Matt McKeown made a motorized trolley back in 2013 which reached speeds of 70 mph. Thankfully, it was tested at Elvington Airfield in North Yorkshire and not in the aisles of his local supermarket!
Biggest Motorized Trolley – This monster shopping trolley was powered by a 7,439 cc engine and built by Frederick Reifsteck in the U.S back in 2012. It was a whopping 27 feet long, 8 feet wide and 15 feet tall. You could fit a lot of groceries in that! The whole construction contained 3,265kg of stainless steel and was 227 times larger than a conventional shopping trolley.
Quickest Price Gun – Super-fast shop assistant Mari Mohede Berg was able to price 29 books in one minute with her price gun back in 2007. The record was set at the Nordstan Shopping Mall in Sweden.
Biggest Shopping Bag – This paper bag was over 73 feet long, 11 feet deep and 50 feet wide. Made in the UK, it was an exact replica of a normal paper bag but scaled up somewhat and even had twine handles. Imagine what you could fit inside that!
